Razor
bumps are a common condition in people with curly hair, predominantly
African American men. Curved hairs grow back into the skin, causing
inflammation and keloidal scarring.
After examination, the physician
may prescribe a combination of medications, cleansers and topical
or oral antibiotics. Occasionally, simple injections are used to
bring the condition under control. Bleaching agents may be used
to even out the darker pigmented areas.
Laser hair removal is also a treatment
option to help prevent further outbreaks of these dark bumps. This
same condition can occur on the back of the neck and on the scalp.
The board-certified dermatologists, Drs. Gottlieb and Goldman, at
Miramar Dermatology/Skin and Cancer Associates can help get this
condition under control.
